Hiking in Effie Yeaw Nature Preserve

I took the morning off from my bar studies for some hiking and fresh air with Sydney and Alvin.  We headed about 20 minutes from our house to Effie Yeaw Nature Preserve.  We have a book with 60 hikes within 60 miles of Sacramento and I have been wanting to visit this place ever since we got the book.  Mostly because there is a picture of a deer in the section describing the trails.  It is a nature preserve so there are a lot of animals to see.  And it goes right up to the American River.  So... here is our day in Effie Yeaw...

There is a display of native american village items including a Tule House, a fire pit, a rock where acorns are ground, and more.

Here is a picture of what we saw towards the beginning of our hike.

Our first animal!  A little squirrel!

There were a lot of these flowers blooming along with star thistle and California poppies.

There's the American River!

Oh my gosh we saw a deer!!  He never took his eyes off us as we walked along the trail.

We are heading down to the river to throw some rocks in and Sydney and Alvin can put their feet in.

This bird was fierce!  He must have been protecting a nest because he literally charged us!  He turned around and flared out his back feathers, too!

More deer!  We were so excited!  This deer actually crossed the path in front of us.  After it trotted of about 20 yards away from us Sydney impressed us by asking to look at her hoof prints!  Such a nature explorer.

More deer!  We saw four deer today!

Throwing rocks into a stagnant pond.

We visited the nature center after our hike.  They had some great displays including some live animals, some touching centers, stuffed animals shown in their habitat and....

Sydney's favorite... A Sydney-sized birds nest!  We had a very fun day hiking.  It was so great to get outside and take some time away from studying for my "big law test" as Sydney and I call it.
